On a whim, around seven years ago, I bought a basket full of black DK yarn and a handful of vintage knitting patterns and needles in a charity shop, and I decided I would teach myself to knit.

I had the basics of how to knit and purl under the belt, from when I was a child, but nothing beyond that. I didn’t even know how to cast on, as Mum would always do that for me when I was little. So what better way to learn than to throw oneself into the deep-end with a fancy lace pattern!
With the help of YouTube tutorials and The Dummy’s Guide to Knitting, I managed to complete this garment fairly quickly and am pleased with the outcome.
The pattern is straight forward to follow, and was forgiving when I made the odd mistake (there are some very random knots and ties in the background haha!).
I think my only reflection would be that black may not have been the absolute best choice of yarn for this as it does have a bit of the Gothic vibe to it (not that there’s anything wrong with that!!), and it’s a bit cobwebby. Nevertheless, I still prize my first knitting project and wear it with pride. Mistakes and all.
I've had my Etsy store since 2012, and for some reason, I never shared this particular pattern. Maybe because I was sentimental about it being my first haha. Anyway, today that changed, and the pattern can be purchased here.
